30 Mile Route Description

Upon leaving the Start you go through the ancient wide High Street of Chipping Sodbury before heading into the county lanes to Dodington. Just after turning right in the middle of Dodington you start to climb the “Dodington Drag” which is the main climb of the 30 mile route. This climb is 1.2 miles long and climbs 258 feet at an average gradient of 4.3%. Once up on the Cotswold escarpment and having crossed the main A46 road the route heads for Acton Turville and on to Littleton Drew just after which you pass the 10 mile marker. A further 1.3 miles brings you to a left turn in the middle of Grittleton and opposite the very impressive old Manor House which is now Grittleton House School.

Just under a mile after leaving Grittleton the route joins the old Roman road The Fosse Way which Linked Exeter in the South West to Lincoln on the East side of the country. The 30 mile route follows this ancient road for 2.3 miles before turning left and heading in a north westerly direction towards Sherston, but just before Sherston doubles back to Luckington and the Food Station where both food and liquid refreshment is waiting for you. When you are refreshed you continue in a Northerly direction towards Sopworth then turn left and head to the Badminton Park, home of the well-known Badminton Horse Trials.

After cycling through the lovely Park the route passes through Hawkesbury and Horton and on to just before Yate Rocks where it joins the 60 and 100 mile routes. After passing through the Ford in Yate Rocks there is a short hill (average 5.4%) and then back to the Rugby Club for the return welcome and refreshment.
